MOTHER LOVE

Mother love can be a very wonderful thing, but sometimes it can be a bit overdone. If this is so the desired result is not achieved.
The following true story points to a case of one mother's love going just a bit too far.
A relation of my wife, after he married, took his bride back to his home which, at the time, was on a sheep station in the great outback of Western Australia. In due course they were blessed with the arrival of their first child who naturally was the pride and joy of the family.
On one occasion, after the mother had bathed this much wanted babe, she placed him in his bassinet on the verandah of the house and after covering him up well with a mosquito net, left him to have his morning rest while she went on with her household chores.

No doubt the babe would be fascinated chortling with delight listening to the melodious notes of the North-West butcher bird, as these birds are common in those parts, and their calls are always a delight to hear.
The Mother of the babe with her ears tuned to hear any strange sounds which might come from the bassinet, detected a funny tapping sort of noise mingling in with the babe's chortling and decided to go and investigate.
To her amazement she found a butcher bird on the bassinet with a six inch centipede in its beak and the tapping noise she had heard was because the bird, to kill the centipede, was bashing it on the frame of the bassinet prior to feeding the baby, so she was glad she had tucked the mosquito net in well.
The mother suggested to the bird that he depart in peace and take his meal on wings with him. However the butcher bird must get full marks for knowing that the chortling sounds coming from the bassinet could only be coming from something young and her mothering instinct told her the only time her young made a sound was when they wanted food, so her reaction was "what could be better than a big fat juicy centipede.
Disconcerting as this episode was to a young Mother, even more so, was that which occurred on another morning when she went out to inspect her babe, only to find a snake coiled up asleep on the outside of the net on top of the sleeping babe.
No doubt the snake was only enjoying the warmth generated from the body of the sleeping child.
The mother, not being impressed by the snake's reason for being where he was, crept up as quietly as she could so as not to awake the snake, and gathering up the four corners of the net with the snake still in it, threw the lot as far away as she could. She could be excused for claiming she felt a bit weak about the knees after that little episode.
